Julie Aherne is an Anglo-Irish pianist, coach and music director. She studied at Royal Holloway, University of London, with James Kirby, and later with Matthew Stanley.
She works as a pianist and coach for Melofonetica, an organisation whose research-based method helps singers achieve better pronunciation, musicality and expression in Italian opera and song. She is a co-founder of The Black Cat Opera Company, with whom she has worked on productions of Don Giovanni, Carmen, Falstaff, Così fan tutte, and La Bohème as répétiteur and producer. In 2016, the company was invited to take their production of Così fan tutte to the Birgitta Festival, Tallinn, with Julie playing harpsichord continuo alongside the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra.
Julie is a keen advocate for community music-making. She directs Woking Ladies Choir, a thriving community group with a repertoire from Mozart to Dolly Parton, and is in demand as a choral rehearsal pianist. She regularly gives recitals alongside soprano Claudia Wood for Celebrating Age Wiltshire, and has recently enjoyed collaborating with the pioneering organisation Intergenerational Music Making.
